Subodh Gupta

Was born in 1964, in Bihar,
one of India's poorest provinces.
He now lives in New Delhi, where he settled
after finishing his studies.
The artist's journey from the country to the city
is an allegory of modern India, where the rural village dimension is rapidly being eradicated
by the cosmopolitan culture.

Cities are mutating into megalopolises, the middle class is restless and in continual expansion
as it warmly embraces globalisation.
Gupta has deliberately placed his art in the context
of this transition.
The gleaming stainless steel utensils used in his works are emblems, icons whose extraordinary simplicity codify the socio-economic and cultural complexity of modern India, reflecting
the short-circuit currently taking place between archaic and modern, tradition and change.

Eclectic, extravagant and multifaceted, Gupta moves effortlessly between painting, sculpture and video, drawing on his past as a stage actor.
